Distill does not require an account and does not collect personal data. Your books and learnings live on your device. When you generate learnings, the book title and author are sent to Distill's backend to produce the response. To understand how the app is used in aggregate, Distill sends a small number of anonymized usage signals to TelemetryDeck — nothing that identifies you or your content.
All books, learnings, and review history are stored locally using SwiftData. Distill does not require an account and has no cloud sync. Deleting the app removes all data.
Distill uses StoreKit for subscriptions. Your App Store receipt is verified by Distill's backend to confirm an active subscription before generating learnings. No Apple ID, email, or other personal identifier is sent or stored.
When you add a book, Distill queries the Open Library search API (openlibrary.org) to retrieve cover art. This request includes the book title and author you entered — no account or identifier is sent. Open Library is operated by the Internet Archive under its own privacy policy.
When you generate learnings, the book title and author are sent to Distill's backend (hosted on Cloudflare Workers). The backend verifies your subscription receipt and forwards only the book title and author to Groq to generate the learnings. No personal data, device identifiers, or reading history are included. Learnings are returned to your device and stored locally. Groq's data handling is governed by Groq's privacy policy.
Distill uses TelemetryDeck to count anonymous events. TelemetryDeck hashes device identifiers before they leave your device, so the data cannot be tied to you. The complete list of events reported:
Each event includes only basic technical context (device model, OS version, app version). No book titles, authors, learnings, or API keys are ever included in analytics. You can read more in TelemetryDeck's privacy policy.
In App Store terms, Distill collects Product Interaction data (the anonymous usage events above) that is not linked to your identity and is not used for tracking. No other data types are collected.
Distill is suitable for all ages. The app collects no personal data from anyone, including children.
If a future update changes how data is handled, this page will be updated before that version ships and the effective date above will change.
